Project Pet at Pinot’s Palette Alameda

Posted on Oct 10, 2016 in Reviews | 0 comments

Pixel’s mom, Trisha, here.  I had a terrific time last month at Pinot’s Palette Alameda painting a masterpiece portrait of my pretty pug Pixel!  Pinot’s Palette Alameda at South Shore Center is a paint and sip studio, with professional artists leading classes to paint a wonderful portrait while they enjoy local East Bay wines and beers.  Unlike most of their classes where everyone paints the same picture, Project Pet is a customized experience where all the class participants paint portraits of their own fur babies like Pixel!

Chowdah in Half Moon BayI was asked ahead of time to send the Pinot’s Palette Alameda team a picture of my pet, and I sent them the picture of Pixel in Half Moon Bay, peeking out from under Dominic’s chair!  I wanted to focus on a good picture of her face since her body is in perpetual motion!  The team sent me a cleaned up grayscale image – basically what they transfer to the canvas ahead of time to follow as a guide.  Before the class started, the staff put out palettes with the basic colors that we’d need to paint our pets.

I had never put paint to canvas before, at least that I can remember, and was a bit worried about how well the painting would turn out.  I knew that I could always go something abstract if I messed up too bad, but I’d have been disappointed with that kind of painting.  There was one instructor on the stage giving us direction on where to start, different techniques for hair/fur, and walked us through a vignette style background.  There were about 6 other staff members walking around helping us all to pick which colors to use, how to best mix them, and other more advanced techniques.  The painting was fairly easy in some sections.  Luckily, since Pixel’s coloring is pretty basic (lots of fawn & black) I only needed help a couple of times to mix colors correctly (to get just the right fawn) and received a TON of compliments from staff and other class mates!

ProjectPet-13What I ended up with is a fantastic painting that many people could not believe I actually painted it.  Mad props to the staff for helping to encourage the painters and guide us so we didn’t leave with an expensive 16″ x 20″ canvas that looks like a kindergartner painted it – this is professional looking and very treasured since I painted it myself.  Since I’m extra crafty, I added a vinyl decal of her name to the corner once I got home 🙂

Pinot’s Palette Alameda is doing another Project Pet class on December 4th.  The cost of the class was $70.  Pinot’s Palette sells beer, wine, & soda for reasonable prices (I highly recommend the Rosatello Moscato) and allows students to bring in outside food since they do not serve food (but no outside beverages).  You can visit their website and sign up for their next project pet class.  Tell them Trisha Fawver sent you!

Check out all of the pictures I took of the process:
